Zahner IM6 electrochemical measuring station and Gamry Reference 600 potentiostat

Universal standard electrochemical methods such as polarization tests and impedance spectroscopy can be used to investigate coatings and characterize materials with regard to their corrosion behaviour. Since the corrosion behavior depends on factors such as surface treatment, microstructure (heat treatment) or impurities, knowledge can be gained about these properties. In addition, the anisotropic corrosion behavior of additively manufactured components can be analyzed.

Description of the system

The potentiostats (Gamry and Zahner) can be used to carry out a wide range of electrochemical test procedures, from simple measurements of the free corrosion potential to polarization measurements, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical noise and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The automated evaluation of the measurements can be carried out quantitatively and reproducibly using software. The short measurement time allows predictions to be made during the development phase of materials (alloys) and coatings, as comparative statements on different materials are quickly available. Measurements are possible with two-, three- and four-electrode arrangements. A micro-measuring cell is also available, with which measurements can be carried out on very small measuring surfaces.

Technical equipment:

  • Impedance spectroscopy in the range of 10 µHz - 1 MHz
  • Current density-potential curves
  • Cyclic voltammetry
  • Micrometer cell
  • Electrochemical noise
  • Measurement mode in two-, three- or four-electrode arrangements
  • Measurements possible in potentiostatic or galvanostatic mode
  • Evaluations are carried out using EchemAnalyst software from Gamry
