Coating Technology – Thermal Spraying and PVD

This technical group investigates current issues and projects in the field of coating technology. It focuses on applications of coatings ranging from the submicrometer range (PVD) to several millimeters in thickness (thermal spraying). Typical applications are wear and corrosion protection coatings but also the development of functional coatings, such as fluid flowable coatings.

Another focus is the development of hybrid technologies in which, for example, soldering is combined with thermal spraying. Intensive research is also being carried out on the transplantation of coatings. The basic idea of this transplantation process is not that the component is coated, but a negative mold, e.g. an insert in a die casting mold, and then the coating is transferred to the actual component. At present, the aluminum die casting process is the main focus here.
